SENATOR TALENT SECURES FUNDING Washington, D.C. – November 22, 2004, U.S. Senator Jim Talent announced he secured $200,000 in seed money to establish a new Center For Functional Foods in Columbia, Missouri. The funding was included as part of the Fiscal Year 2005 Omnibus Appropriations Act. “This center will prove to be a tremendous tool for furthering value-added agriculture in our state,” said Dale R. Ludwig, MSA CEO/executive director. “This is the link between biotechnology and farm income, not to mention an important link between biotechnology and economic development in Columbia. Senator Talent, through this measure and his past work, has established himself as a leading visionary in the field of rural economic development and we couldn’t be more pleased with his leadership. The preventative characteristics of functional foods have the potential to save hundreds of lives and thousands of dollars,” concluded Ludwig. Specifically, the $200,000 will be used to acquire or construct a state-of-the-art facility equipped with modern infrastructure to accommodate research scientists who will focus on the formulation of new soy-based functional foods, which have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer. It is anticipated that many of these new food products will be based on biotech soybean varieties developed at the University of Missouri-Columbia. # # # © Missouri Soybean Programs |
