STATE'S LARGEST CASH CROP PRODUCERS ENDORSE TALENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—July 14, 2006 BENTON CITY, Mo.—Today the Missouri Soybean Association (MSA) Political Action Committee announced their endorsement for U.S. Senator Jim Talent in his campaign for re-election to the U.S. Senate. The event was held at MSA member Jay Schutte’s farm in Audrain County. Both U.S. Senators Talent and Christopher S. “Kit” Bond attended the event and discussed the importance of Missouri’s agricultural industry with a large rural audience. Talent was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 2002 and has continually supported Missouri soybean producers. “Jim Talent has been a friend to Missouri soybean farmers for a long time. He has helped spread awareness of the soybean industry and supported our efforts to increase soy consumption around the globe. His unprecedented Renewable Fuels Standard will increase demand for Missouri soybeans for years to come. Senator Talent is an outstanding legislator and we are pleased to support him in his upcoming campaign for re-election,” said Dale R. Ludwig, MSA executive director/CEO. The Renewable Fuels Standard, which Talent pushed through Congress in 2005, will add 7.5 billion gallons of renewable fuels to the national supply by 2012. He has worked to establish tax credits for biodiesel producers, allowing it to be cost-competitive with conventional diesel. Talent has been a front-runner in biodiesel, informing the public of its benefits and working to create and support legislation which will allow this revolutionary fuel to be available all over the nation. He currently is co-chair of the Senate Biofuels Caucus, working to increase the nation’s supply of cleaner-burning fuels and decreasing our dependence on foreign markets. “It’s an honor to be endorsed by Missouri soybean farmers and to represent them in the U.S. Senate,” said Talent, who serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee and the Senate Energy Committee. “Soybeans are Missouri’s most valuable crop and a huge job producer for our state. I was pleased to work with our soybean producers to pass an energy bill with critical tax credits for biodiesel. Working together, we can also permanently repeal the death tax and make certain that next year’s Farm Bill is written by our producers, not by an agency in Washington, D.C.” “Senator Talent has always been a strong supporter of rural agriculture and Missouri soybean farmers. He shares our values and has worked for Missourians at our nation’s capitol to secure those values and our way of living. His consideration of Missouri soybean farmers throughout his term of service has helped shape the state’s soybean industry. He has spread awareness of soy-based biodiesel, pushing legislation that will increase availability of the fuel across the nation. Talent continually works for the citizens of Missouri and we at MSA are proud to stand behind him as he campaigns for re-election to the United States Senate,” stated Warren Stemme, MSA president. Talent’s place on the Senate Agriculture Committee has given Missouri soybean farmers a significant voice in agricultural policy. In 2005, Senator Talent announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded MSA funding to help soybean producers tap into the prosperous market for soybeans in the Philippines. He understands how Missouri’s agricultural industry is affected by international markets and incorporates that into legislation regarding the world trade and agricultural legislation such as the upcoming Farm Bill. Talent is currently finding ways to extend the Farm Bill in order to protect the valuable farm programs established to allow small farmers opportunities rarely found in agriculture. MSA is a membership organization comprised of more than 1,700 soybean farmers from across the state. The purpose of MSA is to communicate challenges facing farmers and rural Missouri to legislators at both the state and national level. MSA is directed by a volunteer board of 16 farmer leaders. # # # This press release is sent to you courtesy of the Missouri Soybean Association.
