JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Soybean Association (MSA) wishes to
congratulate Missouri's new Governor Jeremiah "Jay" Nixon on
his inauguration today. Nixon, who was sworn in as Missouri's 55th governor,
took the oath of office on the Capitol steps in Jefferson City just after
noon.
In his inaugural address, Nixon called for the development of business
innovations to launch the state into a new economic era. He cited as
an example the scientific discoveries of George Washington Carver, a
Missouri man born into slavery whose work changed global agriculture.
Nixon said he'll look to turn Missouri's economy around by making the
state a magnet for next-generation jobs such as those in the biofuels
industry.
"We'll invest in new technology," Nixon said. "We'll inspire
cutting-edge innovation. And not only will we lead with our ideas, we'll
also lead with our greatest asset: our people. We must prepare our world-class
workers with 21st-century skills and connect them with the jobs of tomorrow
that we will create...jobs that will lead our nation to energy independence."
While campaigning for governor, Nixon said he hoped to develop a robust
biofuels industry that protects the environment, lessens dependence on
foreign oil and reduces environmental impact by working together with
Missouri farmers. The MSA looks forward to working with Nixon on a variety
of agricultural issues important to Missouri's soybean farmers including
biodiesel.
"We are excited to hear Governor Nixon's support for energy independence
in Missouri," said Dale R. Ludwig, executive director/CEO of the
MSA. "Biodiesel not only reduces our dependency on foreign oil,
but also keeps our hard-earned dollars right here in Missouri by creating
new jobs and growing the local economy."
MSA is a membership organization comprised of more than 1,700 farmers
from across the state. The purpose of MSA is to communicate challenges
facing farmers and rural Missouri to legislators at both the state and
national levels to increase profitability for Missouri soybean farmers.
MSA is directed by a volunteer board of 16 farmer leaders.
