National Center
The National Soybean Biotechnology Center (National
Center) at the University of Missouri-Columbia supports interdisciplinary
research on the genomic structure and function of soybean genes and seeks
to apply innovative molecular approaches towards soybean improvement
for Missouri producers.
The National Center is a collaborative program among the University of
Missouri, the USDA-ARS Plant Genetics Unit in Columbia and the Donald
Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Mo. Scientists working in
the National Center receive funding from the Missouri Soybean Merchandising
Council (MSMC), federal agencies and industry.
Strategically located in the heart of the nation, the National Center
aims to foster research partnerships with institutions in the mid-western
and southern states where soybeans are grown. The National Center provides
educational opportunities to students and outreach services to producers,
public agencies, and consumers.
The National Center’s mission:
- Developing genomic resources and
bioengineering technologies for soybean improvement
- Enhancing soybean yield, soybean cyst nematode resistance, stress tolerance,
and value-added composition traits
- Promoting Missouri soybeans for feeds, industrial uses, foods, and
human health
- Developing crop management tools and variety information
for soybean
producers
- Providing educational opportunities and outreach services
- Playing
an active role in the development of the University of Missouri Life
Sciences program and the Interstate 70 Biotech Corridor initiative
