Soyfood Facts

More than 2000 years ago, the Chinese first discovered soybeans and evidence points to the Chinese first producing soymilk and tofu as early as 220 A.D. Early missionaries brought news of soybeans and soyfoods to Europe as early as the late 1600s. Soybeans first came to the United States on early trading ships and Asian immigrants produced soymilk and tofu. In 1896 the American Journal of Pharmacy mentions soymilk.

The U.S. Soybean Industry was born at the beginning of the 20th century. Demand for food, livestock feed and industrial uses expanded soybean production in the 1940s. Henry Ford championed industrial uses of the miracle crop. Throughout the past 60 years, soybeans have become a mainstay for feeding the world as an ingredient in feed, food and industrial products.

Soyfoods have exploded from the early products such as Asian-style soymilk, tofu and tempeh to Americanized products ranging from soy snacks to frozen entrees, and from flavored mainstream soymilk to soy-based energy bars.
